Decision on extra indexation because of high inflation

4 July 2023

The inflation in 2022 was higher than the maximum indexation that is possible according to the policy of Mars Pension Fund. The board of the fund has discussed this with the employer. Because of the Future Pensions Act, it has been decided not to provide extra indexation.

What is indexation?

Normally, life gets a little more expensive every year due to increasing prices. We call this inflation. That is why Mars Pension Fund tries to increase your accrued pension every year. We call this indexation. Indexation is therefore the increase of your pension to allow it to (partly) increase in line with prices.

How much indexation is possible?

Full indexation according to our policy means that pensions can increase 75% in line with the prices, up to a maximum of 3%. As of 1 January 2023, the pensions of pensioners and deferred members have been increased by the maximum indexation that is possible under this policy. More information about that decision can be found here.

Special circumstances due to high inflation

We are currently in a special situation. The increase of the prices is much higher than in previous years. And therefore also higher than the maximum indexation of 3%. Because of these special circumstances, the board of the pension fund has consulted with the employer whether extra indexation is possible.

This year no extra indexation will be granted

As of 1 July 2023, new pension rules will apply, as laid down in the Future Pensions Act. These government rules will change our pension scheme. This is a complicated process with many decisions to be made. For this reason, the employer is unfortunately unable to agree with the board's proposals for additional indexation as of 1 January 2023.

What if inflation remains this high?

At the end of this year, a decision will be taken on the indexation as of 1 January 2024. If the increase of the prices continues to be this high, conversations will take place again in the fourth quarter about possible extra indexation for 2024. In those conversations, the Future Pensions Act will play a big part again.
