2022: an eventful year

We have had an extremely eventful year, not only for Mars Pension Fund, but literally for billions of people around the globe. On one hand, we have left most of the COVID pandemic behind us, allowing us to slowly return to normal. On the other hand, we have seen the return of war to the edge of the European continent, disrupting the lives of many.

The financial position

This eventful year has led to the paradoxical situation that our funded position has improved while the value of our assets has dropped by almost 17%. The improvement in funding position has also allowed us to grant the maximum possible indexation according to our policy as per 1 January 2023. In 2022 we reached an agreement with social partners to remove the wage index cap from the indexation formula. You can read more about this decision in this news article.

Responsible investing

Our work on integrating considerations about responsible investing into our investment portfolio also continued in 2022, which will result in a ‘position paper’. This document will enable the board to consider concrete next steps to further incorporate considerations about responsible investing into its asset allocation.

On the way to a new pension scheme

A steering group has been set up in preparation for the planned transition to a new pension scheme. They will provide the social partners and the board with relevant information that is necessary to enable a successful transition to a new pension scheme.

Change of the guard

We have seen many changes in the people behind Mars Pension Fund in the past year. We have seen board members leave and new board members were appointed. We have seen a member of the Supervisory Council leave and a new member was appointed. We have witnessed changes in the membership of the Investment Committee, and so forth. You can find the details in the annual report.

The people behind the fund

At the beginning of this year, Fred Nieuwland was officially appointed as the new chairperson. Helmy Bakermans has stepped down as director of Mars Pension Fund and Judith Vermeulen has been officially appointed as the new director. To get to know them better, we asked them about the past, present and future in an interview. You can read the interviews via the links at the bottom of this article.
