How certain is your pension?

The amount of your pension is not fixed

The amount of your pension is not entirely certain because MPF is exposed to risk. The main risks our pension fund has to deal with are listed below:

  • Low interest rates make pension more expensive. That means we need more money to be able to pay the same amount of pension.
  • The results of our investments may be disappointing.
  • People on average are living longer. This means we have to pay pensions for longer periods.
  • The risk that prices will rise and your pension will be worth less.

Indexation (final pay plan)

You accrue pension for as long as you continue to work at Mars. Your pension accrual is linked to your total years of service and your last-earned salary. If you stop working at Mars or if you retire, we try to increase your pension annually. This is how we have increased pensions over the past three years:

Year
Indexation inactives
Increase of prices*
2024 0.16% 0.21%
2023 3.76% 14.53%
2022 1.76% 2.70%

* the figures on the increase in prices are based on figures from the CBS.

What happens if there is a shortfall?

If we have a shortfall, we prepare a recovery plan and we may take one or more of the following measures:

  • The pensions are not or not fully increased.
  • The employer’s contribution is increased
  • In the most extreme case, we reduce your pension
