How secure is my pension?

14 September 2017

The UPO shows how much pension you have accrued so far. The Pension Dashboard shows what you can accrue if you continue to work at Mars. How certain is it that you will actually receive these amounts?

The amount of your pension is not fixed. Are you building up a pension in the final pay plan? Then the risks that MPF runs play a role:

  • If interest rates are low (as they are now), this makes pensions more expensive. As a result, we need more money to pay the pensions.
  • The results of our investments may be disappointing.
  • People are getting older. So we need to pay pensions for longer.

Are you building up a pension in the ARP/ASP plan? If so, your pension depends on:

  • The available premium.
  • The investment results. The purpose of investing is to make as much return as possible. This will enable you to buy a good pension later. But the results may be disappointing, even though we spread the risks.
  • The price for buying your pension. When you retire, you buy a pension. This has a price tag. This depends, among other things, on the interest rate at the time you retire. And on life expectancy: on average we are getting older, so pensions have to be paid out for longer. This makes buying pensions more expensive.
