Very small pensions will be canceled

9 July 2018

Very small pensions will expire from 1 January 2019. Suppose you leave Mars after 1 January 2019 and you have accrued no more than 2 euros gross per year in pension. According to the law, this pension then reverts to the pension fund.

What is a very small pension?

What are we talking about when we speak of a 'very small pension'? This concerns a pension of 2 euros or less gross per year. That's about 17 cents gross per month. Administering these very small pensions is expensive. The value does not outweigh the cost.

Where does the money go?

The pension fund decides that. A pension fund must report in its annual report the total amount of very small pensions that has expired in that year. And what was done with that total amount.

Keep a very small pension?

As mentioned: this new rule will apply from 1 January 2019. There are also very small pensions that arose before 2019. In that case, a pension fund may also opt to cancel it. Mars Pensioenfonds currently does not have very small pensions. But maybe you still have such a very small pension from the past somewhere. You can check this on mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl. Do you not want your very small pension - created before 2019 - to expire? Which can! In that case, contact the pension fund before 1 January 2019 where your very small pension is still available. The contact details of the pension fund can be found under the section 'My pension providers' on mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl.

Check whether your very small pension will expire. If this is indeed the case, you can ask to buy this off and transfer the amount to your bank account. Or have it transferred to Mars Pensioenfonds.
